Hi, I’m David Burch and I’m bringing you news about another Qigong study.
There’s a study titled Qigong for the Prevention, Treatment, and Rehabilitation of COVID-19 Infection in Older Adults
that appeared in the June 12, 2020 edition of The American journal of geriatric psychiatry: official journal of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry.
This study posed the question “Can Qigong be used as an intervention to treat respiratory infection, including COVID-19, in the elderly?”
The conclusion was that “The available biological and psychological evidence suggest Qigong may be potentially useful for the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of respiratory infections, including COVID-19. The elderly, in particular, could benefit from Qigong during the ongoing pandemic, for it is easy to practice. Future studies are needed to confirm the effectiveness of Qigong in this context and to provide more evidence on this topic.”
During the intitial outbreaks in the field hospitals of Wuhan, China, patients were treated with a mix of Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Instead of quarantine at home, the doctors led the patients in the practice of Qigong. You recall having seen pictures in the press of patients, nurses, and doctors performing these mind-body-breath meditative exercises.
This study is a search of study literature for “clinical evidence about the application of Qigong in the treatment and rehabilitation of respiratory infection.”
Based on the existing literature, the study authors recommended simple and easy forms of Qigong like abdominal breathing, 8 Pieces of Brocade, and the 6 Healing Sounds for elderly to practice.
